Private charters on Dea Tuda, a 24-metre yacht built by Cantieri di Pisa in 1974, from Marina di Portorosa on the north coast of Sicily. Choose a day at Vulcano and Lipari, a weekend with a night at anchor, or a week around all seven Aeolian Islands, with your own skipper and hostess.

Highlights

  • A 24-metre 1974 Cantieri di Pisa yacht, once the shipyard's flagship
  • 4 cabins, 8 berths, 4 bathrooms and a 20 m² saloon
  • Skipper and hostess included, bed linen too
  • Stromboli's Sciara del Fuoco from the water after dark
  • Vulcano's thermal waters, Panarea, Salina's Il Postino beach

Seven volcanic islands

The Aeolian Islands have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000: these are the volcanoes that gave science the words Strombolian and Vulcanian. Seven islands, each one different, an hour or two apart by sea. Almost nobody sees them properly, because the ferries run to a timetable and the day boats turn round at four. A yacht doesn't.

A day, or a weekend

Leave Portorosa at eleven for Vulcano: swim where the water is warmed from below, and walk up towards the crater if you want to. Then Lipari, the largest island, with its old town above the harbour and beaches of white pumice. The two-day version does it slowly, with a night at anchor and the lights of the island on the water.

A week: the seven pearls

Stromboli is the reason to take the week: from a yacht after dark, the glowing rock rolling down the Sciara del Fuoco is the finest sight in the Mediterranean. Panarea has Cala Junco and a Bronze Age village of more than twenty stone huts. Salina has Pollara, the beach where Il Postino was filmed, and Filicudi and Alicudi, furthest west, have almost no cars and almost no one.

FAQ

Questions about Dea Tuda

All questions
How much is a private yacht charter in the Aeolian Islands?

On Dea Tuda, for the whole yacht and up to 12 guests with skipper, hostess and fuel included: €1,900 for a day at Vulcano and Lipari, €3,800 for two days with a night at anchor, and €13,300 for a week around the islands.

Where is Portorosa, and how do I get there?

Marina di Portorosa is in Furnari, in the province of Messina, on the north coast of Sicily facing the Aeolian Islands. Catania airport is about 150 km away (roughly two hours by car), Palermo airport about 210 km. By car, leave the A20 Messina–Palermo motorway at Falcone: the marina is about five minutes away.

How far are the Aeolian Islands from Portorosa?

Vulcano, the nearest, is 14 to 22 miles away depending on where you anchor, and Lipari is about three miles further. The day cruise leaves at 11:00 and is back in Portorosa in the evening.

Can you see Stromboli erupt from a boat at night?

Yes, on the seven-day charter: after dark, from the water off the Sciara del Fuoco, you can watch glowing rock roll down into the sea. Stromboli erupts almost continuously, but no single night is guaranteed: cloud over the summit can hide it.

Can you swim in Vulcano's hot springs?

Yes: at Acque Calde, in the Baia di Levante, the sea is warmed by volcanic vents bubbling up from the seabed. The mud pool nearby has been closed at times for safety and is managed separately, with its own entrance fee; check on the day whether it is open.

When is the best time to sail the Aeolian Islands?

June and September: the sea is warm (around 22–26 °C), the days are long and the islands are less crowded than in July and August. The yacht sails in other months too, whenever the sea allows.

Where do we sleep on an Aeolian Islands yacht charter?

On board, in Dea Tuda's four cabins with eight berths and four bathrooms; bed linen and towels are included. Nights at anchor are included; if you prefer a night in a harbour, the marina berth (about €300 a night in high season) is charged at cost.

Are meals included on Dea Tuda?

They can be added when you book: breakfast and lunch on board for €60 per guest a day, or full board for €90 per guest a day. Otherwise food and drinks are not included.

What are the seven Aeolian Islands?

Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi. Together they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, and the week on Dea Tuda can reach all seven.

Can we have an Opera Lecture or a cooking class on Dea Tuda?

Yes, on request and at an extra cost, because our Salerno crew travels to Portorosa to run them. In an Opera Lecture, our founder shows the great masterpieces of opera on the yacht's TV and explains them; the cooking classes teach the secrets of Italian and Neapolitan cooking. Ask when you book. On Antonella IV in Salerno, both are included in the price.

Can I book a seat on Dea Tuda instead of the whole yacht?

Yes. Besides the private cruise, Dea Tuda sails shared day cruises from Portorosa to Vulcano and Lipari: you book only your own seats, at €320 per person with skipper, hostess and fuel included, and share the yacht with up to 12 guests. The shared cruise sails with at least 6 guests in total and is confirmed 3 days before; otherwise you choose another date, the whole yacht as a private cruise (paying the difference) or a full refund.
